anchoring of upper cabinet - Was extra support required to hang the ceiling level cabinets?
We are in the middle of renovating our kitchen using many of your designs.
An Ikea employee expressed concern about anchoring these cabinets to the wall
thank you in advance for your reply »
thirdstone inc. [^] To clarify the top row of cabinets are wall mounted - not ceiling mounted. The following graphic was posted for another user asking a similar question. Rather than try and search for it, here it is...
Note the bulkhead frame behind the top row of cabinets. This is no different than wall-mounting a standard upper cabinet. The bulkhead in this case functioned as a mech/plumbing chase.
Love the white effect - Ikea is not available in our country. If I have to make a similar kitchen get it down what material should i use for similar effect??laminate, duco paint ??? What are the options ... Pls help »
thirdstone inc. [^] Hi chakuli - Most kitchen suppliers will offer a 'high-gloss' thermafoil finish like IKEA's. I would try that first. If not there are plastic laminate surfaces with a similar high-gloss affect.
thirdstone inc. [^] In the LG House, the 7' high Thermador Fridge and similar height high-cabinet for the Wall Ovens established the datum line to the underside of the most upper row of cabinets, so it's possible but it depends on the size of your fridge and other appliances. The result may leave you only with 12" high cabinets along the top with an 8' high ceiling.
Conversely, you could lower the entire double row upper cabinet to maintain similar proportions and to align with your selected fridge height.
Hope this helps! For more answers search this photo for Elevation drawings of this kitchen.
Regular client - Can you tell me the dimensions of the room ,this is what we would like to do in our home and how wide and long is the island.
If we sent you our dimensions could you see if the same thing could be repeated. How room is 216 inches long X 159 inches. Thank you Dan Berube »
thirdstone inc. [^] If you're a 'client' means you're paying for my services :)
Each main wall is 16'. Aisles are 3'-3". Island is 10' long × 27" wide. So your space shoul definitely work fine
Use 48" aisle width between island and kitchen walls. Make your island 36" wide (24" base cabinets + 12" depth eating counter or 12" floor mounted wall cabinets
emilycole Any chance you'd be willing to offer me the same advice? I have a long narrow row home and the kitchen shrinks down even further to 10'6" wide x 23'7" long. We just gutted it and are trying to figure out the space. We were thinking of a seating nook on one side then trying for something like what you did... With a wall of cabinets and the fridge and range on one side, the opposing wall would be open, and then an island with a sink and dishwasher. We are concerned that this space is going to be too narrow for an island though. The ceilings are super high - roughly 10 feet. Do you have any advice or have you ever worked with a long narrow space like this? Thanks!
Flooring alternatives? - Hi - any leads on another flooring that comes close to the Anthracite by IKEA Markland? I used the same floor in my office, but it has been d/c for over a year now. Understand it is by a German manufacturer for IKEA, but don't know whom. Really beautiful!! »
Can I add tempered glass to the from of my refrigerator instead of wood? - I have an older Amana that had a wood front panel to match my cupboards. I've done a bit of an update and would like to use glass instead of the wood on the panel-ready front. Any thoughts or suggestions? »
thirdstone inc. [^] I suppose this is possible with a wood frame around a clear glass. It will take some detailed work and great skill however. Don't know how much this helps, you'll just need to do some research or talk to a kitchen installer.
Could you please tell me where the cabinets and doors are from...? - Both my wife and I love the wonderful simplicity and beauty of this kitchen...great work...!. »
There is a lot of information written on this Kitchen. The cabinetry and finishing is entirely IKEA. Click on the following and kindly research the 50 questions asked about this kitchen...all of which have been answered.
Oven cabinet - Hi, can you tell me which Ikea cabinet you used for the oven? Did you add a separate additional cabinet for the uppermost cabinet?
Thanks! »
What is the height between the countertop and the upper cabinets? - I love your design! What is the height between the countertop and the upper cabinets? I have seen recommendations of 18 inches, but this seems to be the "traditional" height. I have seen examples of more modern kitchen designs, and the height seems to be larger, like 24in, to make the space feel more airy. Do you have a recommendation?
I also like how you made the upper cabinets go to the ceiling to maximize storage. I have 9 foot ceilings, so I plan to use two rows of 12in deep upper cabinets, but position vertically instead of horizontally. Do you recommend using a larger vertical upper on the bottom row and shorter uppers for the top row (I see this in traditional designs)? Or would it be better to make it symmetric and use the same sized cabinets for both rows? »
To answer your first question, i would recommemd a minimum 24" from top of counter to u/s of upper cabinets. It also depends on the activity happening at the countertop level. The LG House main kitchen wall in this photo is actually 30" from counter to u/s of upper cabinets due to the rangehood above the cooktop.
Like your project the LG House ceiling is also 9', so in your case (again depending on whether you have a range-hood along your wall, i would suggest 2 rows of upper cabs both 24" high each. The top rows are typically used for storage or for items that are not regularly used.
Danniels-French Design, ARIDO, IDC Hi, just wanted to add my two cents to this discussion. If you google the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) you will get a list of their guidelines. There recommendation for distance between counter top and under side of wall cabinets is a MINIMUM of 15" . Other guideline books I use specify a minimum of 18", which I feel is often too much. Clearance over your sink or range is a minimum of 24" and some ranges will have their own specifications and you also have to watch for clearance at the sides of gas ranges. Sinks you need the clearance so you don't bang your head into it!
But, these are all just "guidelines" and so you have to take it as it is meant and then figure out what works for you and your situation. For instance, some of the high end European kitchen cabinet makers have totally re-vamped kitchen standards. If interested check out the web site for a company called Valcucine and then look under Guidelines - ergonomics. The thought process is fantastic. Sometimes we just keep doing things one way but sometimes its good to stop and think!
Anyway, just something to think about. I love doing kitchens - I think they are really the heart of the home and deserve a lot of thought and planning.
beautiful kitchen - how much space is between the sink and the stove (the aisle)? I'm afraid I would bump into the cook while cleaning up the dishes:) »
thirdstone inc. [^] If i had an opportunity to re-design this kitchen from a functional point, i would have proposed the 'revised' version - i.e. two separate work zones.
If you have the room, ideally you would want to have a minimum 4' aisle width

thirdstone inc. [^] Hi Mooniecat - We specified the "Blizzard #2141" series from the Caesarstone line for this project. You may also want to consider the "Pure White #1141".
Reveal above cabinets - Hi! Love your work. Thanks for sharing!! My question: I like the narrow reveal above the top of the cabinets. Did you do that for aesthetics or functionality & can you share a section detail of how you addressed if you have one? Thanks in advance!!! »
georgeabraham I really like your kitchen design. very pleasing colors and clever design. Is the depth of the upper cabinet 12 or 24"? I saw it in the section that 12" depth was used by mechanical chase. Does the mechanical chase run all throughout the cabinet area or only where the cooktop is provided? Thanks!
Im having a house built and im trying to copy your kitchen jetson design - the cabinets above the stove top are they :AKURUM
Wall cabinet horizontal, white, Abstrakt white gloss »
Yes. They are 15" high x 39" wide. There are 2 of them on each side of a 30" panel which is simply a cover panel over a 12" depth the range hood. There is a light valance just below the cabinet to shroud the under cabinet lighting.
love your design and generosity in sharing - thanks so much for sharing the details to your design. I'm currently working on my kitchen and baths and it's helping me a great deal to see this inspiration. You have a keen eye for modern clean design and you certainly open my eyes to IKEA as a very beautiful and viable option. »
thirdstone inc. [^] knitmaiden - Thanks for the kind words!
Glad to help where we can and all the best with your own project. We would be interested in seeing the finished product so feel free to upload to this comment thread in the future.
Would this be an easy fix for replacing a plastic fluorescent panel? - I want to update my small kitchen by replacing the fluorescent panel with recessed lighting. Is this panel hung using spacers? »
The width of the island is a full depth base cabinet (+/- 24") and the countertop is an additional 3", so 27" depth counter surface. The island is 10' long.
The aisles are 3'-3" wide. If you have more room, i would suggest a 4'-0" width instead but min. 3'-0"
Fridge is Thermador. All other appliances are Bosch - Dishwasher (super quiet!), Induction Cooktop, and Wall Ovens. Sinks - Blanco; Fixtures - Grohe
Ceiling lights - Thanks for posting a beautiful kitchen. Can you tell me the size of the copper colored halogen lights as wellas the manufacturer. Many thanks. »
Gorgeous back splash..please forgive yet another technical question... - How did the installer fasten cover panels to the wall? Have read IKEA installation instructions and cover panels are typically screwed from inside cabinet keeping outside looking flawless, but cannot work for back splash. Am using IKEA panel in my own kitchenette and also in a bachelor studio kitchen... would appreciate direction on this...thanks so much, Violette 13 »
The Fridge is a panel ready Thermador 36" w X 84" high. We then had the same high-gloss material matching the kitchen applied to the front. This requires a lot of skill so make sure you hire someone who knows how to do this.
IKEAs high cabinets are available in 80" heights + 4" for the plinth (kick) and this will equal the height of a 7' (84") fridge. IKEA also has a panel available in 36" width so there was no need to cut on at least 3 sides. Fridge side panels are also the same material as the cabinetry (high-gloss white).
shatzreise Thank you soo much for your reply. I was working with the Ikea fridge and no wonder I couldn't make the height work. I'll check out the fridge you suggested.
countertop - I love how responsive and open you are! Thank you in advance...
What is the countertop thickness on island and cooktop? I love the look of the thin counters, however, my fabricator can only do the Quartzite I picked out in 3cm.
What is the edge design used? »
rjacobson333 Thanks - that helps with the vanity explanation. I will check teago, Great idea with the kitchen cabinet....I think you need to do an Ikea blog, you make it look so good.
I like the picture...I see - the 3 cm probably will be okay, I'm over thinking every detail!
Lip pull - see attached. The handle for the drawers or doors in the kitchen. That lip pull is small - 1 1/4 inch wide. Attaches to the inside of the drawer - like you have.
thirdstone inc. [^] Hi Robyn - A blog sounds like another full time job ;)
That lip pull looks like the 'klippig' or something from hefale. I had to correct myself in another discussion but the actual pulls we spec'd for this project was the "Blankett" handle.
what are the cabinets, refirgerator + panels, countertops and islands made from? And how much was the cost? - Sorry if I'm throwing all these questions at once, but I'm building a house that has a similar style to yours and I am very interested in your materials. This is the first time for me by the way. I haven't started but am looking around right now.
I guess my biggest question is for the refrigerator. How do custom paneled refrigerators get made/built? I went on Thermador's site and you can select 'custom paneled. So do you just order the fridge without the stainless steel and add the panel that you bought from your cabinetry manuacture? How is it added onto the fridge? My concern is if the fridge will overheat? I saw many people do this but I want to make sure. How much is the $ for the Thermador and the the panels. Do we just tell the cabinet manfacturer the sizes of it?
How much was the cost of the your kitchen? Everything, like the applicances too. I read in your questions that your cabinets are from Ikea? How is the quality of it, I'm aware Ikea isn't top notch, but is it still good quality? Can you see anything that may make it look ... 'cheap'?
Also with the island , the grey side, is the same material as the backsplash? It's thicker then the backsplash though, right? If not, then how is it holding up?
Overall I LOVE your kitchen! Great job (:
Thanks »
Thanks for the comment. I assume when you call it 'glass cooktop' you referring to it as an induction - see link below. If this is what you're planning to use it should be safe but if you're planning to use something else you should confirm with the cooktop manufacturer.
high gloss grey - I have read a few places that the white frame of the cabinets will possibly peek through the sides of the abstrakt high gloss grey doors. Did you put strips on the white edging of the cabinets, or did you find this was not a problem? Thx... »
yes, the white melamine frame may peek slightly between the gray panels, but i didn't find it much of a problem. Applying tape edge on the cabinets would resolve this.
lower wall cabinets - How did you get the 3 long horizontal Abstrakt cabinets on the lower wall shelf? When I search Ikea site they don't make the doors in that size - or let's put it this way - they do make that size, but they say it needs to be vertical, not horizontal. Thx! :) »
Thanks for the kind words! As for cracking or splitting we didn't experience any problems with working with this material. When cutting i would purchase a small high-gloss drawer door (check IKEA's 'as-is' section and maybe pick one up for 5 bucks) and test by cutting it. Good luck!
Sorry for the confusion. The pulls are in fact the aluminum "Blankett" handle (1-15/16"). I see that they have since added other sizes ranging from 2" up to 30" length
I am loving everything about this kitchen - I am on a third house remodel and am now very budget conscious. Are these Ikea cabinets, as I have been looking at them, and am leaning toward either grey or white, so just wondering if these are Ikea. Also, does this Ikea flooring hold up? I would be a little concerned about that part. I am going to see where you are located because I LOVE your work. :) »
Lindy We have such similar tastes. I had chosen almost the same, but Hansgrohe because it seemed a better price, but this Grohe is sleeker and the price is comparable. I ordered the Grohe Concetto vanity faucets (the angled one called NEW). I have settled (I think) on a sleek Krauss double sink but it's 32", just want to make sure it fits their 35-7/8" cab. For some reason Ikea says their 30" must have a min 35-7/8" cab. So that confuses me a bit.
Love this! - We're about to start our build and are having a very similiar layout for our kitchen including the breakfast bar positioning. The cupboards will be white high gloss with a light granite bench top. Our carpet in the living area will be a dark grey and will flow into the tiled dining and kitchen area so wondering what type and colour grey tile we should use? And ideas for a splashback (not keen on glass). Thanks. »
The color Grey i would suggest depends on whether you have a 'warm' or 'cool' grey in the Living Room carpet. To get a similar look as the LG House consider the following:
AMES Tile DesertGlow Series DGT16 (wall) and DGT1224 (Taupe)
AMES Tile DesertGlow Series DGS16 (wall) and DGS1224 (Smoke)
Price? - Thanks for sharing all of your information on this beautiful kitchen, VERY helpful!!! If you don't mind me asking can you please tell me how much the total cost was for the kitchen cabinets, backsplash, and island? »
Regarding the cost of the kitchen cabinetry, including island and backsplash only (see previous notes) was approx. $13K (CAD). Quartz countertops was approx. $4K (CAD)
These figures exclude installation and appliances.
Hope this helps! Thanks for the comment and interest in the LG House. Stay tuned for future projects to be uploaded to this site
This is a floating floor system from IKEA called "Markland Flooring" $2.49/SF. Unfortunately, the 'anthracite' colour (shown here) is now discontinued, but is still available in 'white'. Each laminate panel is a approx. 12" x 48"
I would recommend protecting the flooring with a rug at entry locations. The high-gloss finish does show dust and foot marks but is super easy to clean. ~ thirdstone inc. [^]
samirim Both of the Markland have now been discontinued (i had used Anthracite in my office before I saw your project!). Any leads on the German manufacturer (who made this for IKEA), and any alternatives? What appealed to me is the honesty of this laminate--it seeks to only look like what it is. Again, any close 2nds?
installation of backsplash easy and advice on counter top color - I love how responsive you are to all these questions...very appreciated. also, love this kitchen. i am going to "steal" your idea of the ikea panel backsplash. how was this applied to the wall and is it easy to cut? also, i was planning on using organic white ceasarstone. now i'm second guessing myself and wondering if i should switch to blizzard/snow...it seems what everyone uses in modern kitchens. would love your advice. (the organic seemed "whiter" and "crisper" when we looked at the slabs. »
thirdstone inc. [^] Hi Haldesign - Thanks for the photos. The kitchen's looking good so far!...
There would appear to be quite a nice contrast already if you were to go with the Bllizard. So i think that's a good choice. Either way, Quartz in general is a very resilient material so i wouldn't be concerned about marking or wear and tear.
Judging by the height difference between the base cabinet and the gas range, looks like you're planning on a thicker profile (nosing) rather than sticking with the standard thicknesses of 20cm or 30cm from ceasarstone.
haldesign thanks for the advice! i am going with blizzard. and promise this is my last question. my fabricator is trying to talk me into a butt edge for my waterfall countertop instead of mitre. they said it looks more seamless but i feel the mitre would look better (they said it is much more challenging to get the mitre to look good) have you had any experience with this? thanks again!
Backsplash - Very nice work. Is the backsplash material water and stain resistant? And just confirming that it's just a simple panel just like the ikea cabinet doors, correct? »
If I were to use white glossy tiles or the white gloss floors from Ikea with this glossy white kitchen. - And use the same glossy backsplash in grey would it be fine. Or should the backsplash also be glossy white??? »
I think all white with a gray backsplash would look sharp! Dark brown table would also look good for the table - similar color range i assume as the ceiling treatment over the island in the LG House.
The side panel of the kitchen island is 30", which is a panel size that is available from IKEA
Thanks for sharing ideas of your Kitchen project. Best of luck with everything.
I forgot to answer your last question. The baseboard is not a Fryreglet. I used a shadow bead to end the drywall approx. 2" above the finish floor. The same flooring material (as a baseboard) was then applied to the 2" reveal below the drywall. I'll post some more information on this tomorrow...
electric - where do you put the outlets on the island? I do not want them on the side of the quartz as I think it will ruin the look. What did you do? »
tiluarora Hi Amazing kitchen, is the entire kitchen IKEA cabinets. What toe kick did you use for the kitchen white or stainless steel . Also what is your counter top and the floor tiles???
thirdstone inc. [^] Hi tiluarora - Thanks for the comments.
The entire kitchen is from IKEA with some slight adjustments and custom detailing to make it all work and unique. The countertop is Ceastarstone quartz - color "Blizzard #2141"
The finish floor is a floating system from IKEA called "Markland Flooring" $2.49/SF. Unfortunately, the 'anthracite' colour (shown here) is now discontinued, but is still available in 'white'. Each laminate panel is a approx. 12" x 48"
The toe-kicks all match the cabinetry. (high-gloss white)
Fridge built-in look... How? - Hi there,
First of all, congrats on such an amazing project!, we are in the process of preparing/designing our kitchen and it is projects like yours and your awesome willingness to help others like us that make this project easier and fun.
We have just noticed your fridge at the end of your counter, it seems like it has a built-in look. We are looking at ways to get one (24in width) so far we can see that we can fit it inside a tall akurum High cabinet frame(http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/84381110/#/94381510) and cut the front doors to size from abstrackt high gloss white (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70115875/?query=70115875#/40115867) we are concerned about how to get the doors cut to size and whether the finish of the cut is going to look good. Can we ask you how you went around this? Also what is your fridge side panel material? also abstrackt high gloss white?
Thanks once again for sharing your project.

island - what is the suface you used for your island and what are the dimensions. We are planning on 104 long x 42 deep in Caesarstone or similar quartz. We are being told it may need to be supported which in my mind wrecks the entire look of it. Love the look of yours so curious. »
thirdstone inc. [^] Thanks for the comment on the island.
Most of the kitchen material, with the exception of the quartz countertop, was from IKEA. We chose a contractor (who installed all the caninetry) based on his skillsets, availability and scheduling. We also knew that it would require patience due to some of the custom detailing requirements.
menoo hi, can you tell me what quartz material you used for the counters? it looks pure white, no speckles. is that correct? your kitchen design is so beautiful and clean. thank you!
how do you do it? looks so streamlined - I have one last question, and thanks again for answering all my previous ones. I have my cabinets all set up, but I can't make the deeper upper cabinets have that flush clean look against the more shallow second level uppers. Is there a piece of cover panel placed under there? I understand if you don't want to give up some trade secrets. But this would definitely help my kitchen out! Thank you »
Lindy I have a few questions about this design. I know you put a strip of laminate under the top cabinets, but I don't think you used the high gloss white sheets from Ikea as those sheets are 1/2" thick. May I ask what you used?
Also, did you use this same material on the sides of the cabinets? My uppers will not be against any wall, so the sides of each set of cabinets needs a high-gloss covering. Does this stuff stay on well? Two ends will be near the stove. Maybe it is better if each set of upper cabinets (2) be encased in a frame.
I see you created a frame for the lower uppers to provide depth to insert them.
thirdstone inc. [^] Hi Lindy - It is in fact a thin high-gloss white plastic 'laminate' sheet. I think you're confusing this with the IKEA 'cover' or 'side panel' which is the 1/2" thick panel you're referring to.
in regards to the hood vent, i can't see it clearly, but is it a pull out or is it actually hidden in one of the upper cabinets? what what kind of hood vent is it? i thank you for your answer »
sm2012 I love the look of the hood in the 12" cabinet. But a standard hood is usually 17-18" deep.
Are there any performance concerns with the 12" power pack? Is there any vapour accumulation on the underside of the upper (24" deep) cabinets?
thirdstone inc. [^] Hi sm2012 - Yes, typically conventional hoods are 18"+ deep. However, the IncaSmart Hood is designed to achieve the look as you see here. There has been no performance concerns or issues regarding vapour.
thirdstone inc. [^] Aha! Great question. We wanted the look of a back-painted backsplash but there was no budget for this. So rather than pay thousands extra for this detail, we decided to use the 'charcoal' side-panels - the same kitchen cabinet material you see on the kitchen island - as the back-splash. This matches the same surface of the white high-gloss kitchen cabinetry. Best of all it was a fraction of the cost of using glass.
Keisha Smith Thank you! My gosh these are some great kitchen cabinets Edmonton; I was actually wondering the same thing. What kind of materials they use and how much will a kitchen like this cost? http://www.kitchenmagicinc.ca/ It is just beautiful
6. Tab PullsThese pulls are for the minimalist who wants a bit more. They're discreet but still functional. They can be done small on all cabinets or longer, running the full length of the cabinet door or drawer.
Double oven. Ovens separate from the cooktop offer homeowners more flexibility with their layout. Also, many people prefer raised ovens rather than having to bend down to use a range oven. It's definitely better on your back! If you've got room for this arrangement and can find a spot for your microwave, this is a great setup. In a kitchen like this, a microwave drawer hidden on the back of the island is a great solution. The main sink on the island allows for the sleek electric cooktop to be located on the back wall.Variations: Double ovens typically come in 24-, 27- and 30-inch widths; the overall heights vary.
22. Find the Right Oven Arrangement for Your KitchenToday's oven arrangements go far beyond the traditional stovetop-above, oven-below combination. This ideabook helps make sense of the myriad combinations of wall ovens, warming drawers, double ovens and more.
Note the bulkhead frame behind the top row of cabinets. This is no different than wall-mounting a standard upper cabinet. The bulkhead in this case functioned as a mech/plumbing chase.
