Not sure what range hood is that, but definitely an undercabinet hood. Covered by the cabinet, you still have a clean fresh look in your kitchen with a functional rangehood!

You should check out our Arezzo undercabinet hood

We spec'd the 'Faber Incasmart' model which is, at most, 12" depth and therefore aligns with the upper cabinets. The Arezzo above still appears to be deeper than 12" - 18".

Hi amelialouise - That's very thoughtful for you to say. Glad we're able to help and appreciate that you recognize our efforts!...

To answer your question, the pulls used here are IKEA's aluminum "Blankett" handles (1-15/16"). They have since added other sizes ranging from 2" up to 30" length.

Check IKEA for the latest that they carry...

Thank you! I've used those in a condo project so should have recognized them. Mockett is a much higher priced and probably slightly better quality alternative. Being that you've now made me lazy...LOL...the lighting over the island looks fantastic. Would you mind telling me what it is?
BTW, if you are ever looking for a really interesting light fixture that can be customized in many ways check out the "Twig" light from Apparatus. Website, apparatustudio.com.

I did read all your posts and hope I did not miss this answer! - Love, Love your kitchen design! Thank you for such detailed information I love it!!! We are installing a kitchen very similar to your in a commercial property. The under cabinet lighting is my point of interest. Are the cabinets routed and lighting installed in the cabinetry? Or did you use a slight revel cover up? My goal is to have lighting flush with the cabinetry (or high gloss acrylic panel on the underside of the cabinetry). We have been researching zenolite, do you have any experience/thoughts about such type of product? Would love to know! Thank you again for information!

Hi Sherrie - Thank you for the comments. Sorry I've taken so long to respond.

I haven't worked specifically with zenolite, but i can see where a product like that could work for you in this case.

I would recommend either of the following Options. We went with Option 1 which uses a light valance to screen the under-cabinet lighting.

...here's a closeup image of the upper cabinets. Note the Light Valance on the lower row of upper cabinets.

You can also see the underside of the top row of cabinets treated with a high-gloss sheet of plastic laminate to match the cabinetry. This hides the seams between each of the cabinet frames.

The middle panel covers the range hood which is only 12" depth. It pops off in case you need to service the range hood.

Filler pieces - My contractor is going to install filler pieces for the same type of Ikea cabinets for us tomorrow. A quick question -- with your filler piece (above the wall oven) -- it looks flush with the door fronts - is this true? I like the look of this - but I wasn't sure since the gables at Ikea only have finished edges on 4 sides. If you were to cut it down and make a similar piece I would assume a few edges wouldn't be a finished high gloss white? If not, is it noticeable? Thank you for your help!

Hi Jessica - Yes, the filler piece over/under the wall oven is flush with the door fronts. Any cut edge could be finished with tape edge to match the cabinetry. As an example, the inside face of the side gable of the Kitchen Island (visible in this photo) is faced with a high-gloss laminate.

Hope this helps!

The upper row of cabinets along the ceiling are in fact 12" depth but are flush with the High-Cabinets (counter depth). Note there is a Mechanical Chase for venting and plumbing behind these cabinets. The middle row of upper cabinets are 12" depth but recessed.

The following graphic should illustrate how this was done.

Thirdstone - excellent input about the high gloss panels. I think this is an exciting line for both the kitchen and for the bathroom. They are easy to work with for a DIY'er (they can be drilled and cut with normal woodworking tools), come in a variety of colors and are waterproof (and less costly than backpainted glass).

You make some good points about not being able to use them where the heat is too high though. I'll include some images below as well as a link that provides more info on this material:

I recommend using a back-painted glass backsplash. You can make it any color and it's non-pourous, easy to clean and doesn't have any grout lines. It's also very cost-effective compared to tile!

Thanks ouidub - Sounds simple enough but i know from experience how costly back-painted glass backsplash can be too. On another project of ours one company quoted us +/-$4000 for a similar area that you see in the above photo. The 'charcoal' high-gloss panels specified for the LG House was a fraction of that quote. (material alone being around $300.00(CAD)

Hi paigeblackwelder,

Simply knowing what appliances you want and the type of cabinetry you plan to purchase is key to ensuring you are able to plan and design your kitchen properly. Most kitchen measurements are universal.

With the exception of Refrigerators, appliances are generally the depth of base cabinets (24"), but in this case the fridge was also counter depth making it 'flush' (same plane) with the rest of the cabinetry. In this example the height of the fridge is 7' which happens to be the same height of IKEA's High Cabinets (see Wall Ovens)

It can become very complex if you're looking to build a kitchen that looks very clean and precise. If you don't think you can take on a project of this nature, my advice is to hire a kitchen designer.

Hope this helps!

I don't think this was asked before, in this picture you can see a continuous toekick plate. Hi jedisalf

Thanks for the question and kind words.

There is a side panel on the left side of the double wall ovens. However, it was cut and therefore doesn't go all the way to the floor. Thus you have a toe-kick condition that is continuous.

To clarify the top row of cabinets are wall mounted - not ceiling mounted. The following graphic was posted for another user asking a similar question. Rather than try and search for it, here it is...

Note the bulkhead frame behind the top row of cabinets. This is no different than wall-mounting a standard upper cabinet. The bulkhead in this case functioned as a mech/plumbing chase.

In the LG House, the 7' high Thermador Fridge and similar height high-cabinet for the Wall Ovens established the datum line to the underside of the most upper row of cabinets, so it's possible but it depends on the size of your fridge and other appliances. The result may leave you only with 12" high cabinets along the top with an 8' high ceiling.

Conversely, you could lower the entire double row upper cabinet to maintain similar proportions and to align with your selected fridge height.

Hope this helps! For more answers search this photo for Elevation drawings of this kitchen.

Any chance you'd be willing to offer me the same advice? I have a long narrow row home and the kitchen shrinks down even further to 10'6" wide x 23'7" long. We just gutted it and are trying to figure out the space. We were thinking of a seating nook on one side then trying for something like what you did... With a wall of cabinets and the fridge and range on one side, the opposing wall would be open, and then an island with a sink and dishwasher. We are concerned that this space is going to be too narrow for an island though. The ceilings are super high - roughly 10 feet. Do you have any advice or have you ever worked with a long narrow space like this? Thanks!

The range hood in this case is less than 12" depth which is suitable to fit seamlessly into the upper cabinets rather than having the bulky conventional range hood.

We specified the Inca Smart Standard Insert Hood by Faber - http://www.faberonline.com/incasmart.html. It also very reasonably priced!

The fan is vented direct-out since it is an exterior wall condition.

What is the height between the countertop and the upper cabinets? - I love your design! What is the height between the countertop and the upper cabinets? I have seen recommendations of 18 inches, but this seems to be the "traditional" height. I have seen examples of more modern kitchen designs, and the height seems to be larger, like 24in, to make the space feel more airy. Do you have a recommendation? I also like how you made the upper cabinets go to the ceiling to maximize storage. I have 9 foot ceilings, so I plan to use two rows of 12in deep upper cabinets, but position vertically instead of horizontally. Do you recommend using a larger vertical upper on the bottom row and shorter uppers for the top row (I see this in traditional designs)? Or would it be better to make it symmetric and use the same sized cabinets for both rows?

Hi lkljunky

Thanks for taking the time to write.

To answer your first question, i would recommemd a minimum 24" from top of counter to u/s of upper cabinets. It also depends on the activity happening at the countertop level. The LG House main kitchen wall in this photo is actually 30" from counter to u/s of upper cabinets due to the rangehood above the cooktop.

Like your project the LG House ceiling is also 9', so in your case (again depending on whether you have a range-hood along your wall, i would suggest 2 rows of upper cabs both 24" high each. The top rows are typically used for storage or for items that are not regularly used.

Hope this helps!

Hi, just wanted to add my two cents to this discussion. If you google the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) you will get a list of their guidelines. There recommendation for distance between counter top and under side of wall cabinets is a MINIMUM of 15" . Other guideline books I use specify a minimum of 18", which I feel is often too much. Clearance over your sink or range is a minimum of 24" and some ranges will have their own specifications and you also have to watch for clearance at the sides of gas ranges. Sinks you need the clearance so you don't bang your head into it!

But, these are all just "guidelines" and so you have to take it as it is meant and then figure out what works for you and your situation. For instance, some of the high end European kitchen cabinet makers have totally re-vamped kitchen standards. If interested check out the web site for a company called Valcucine and then look under Guidelines - ergonomics. The thought process is fantastic. Sometimes we just keep doing things one way but sometimes its good to stop and think!

Anyway, just something to think about. I love doing kitchens - I think they are really the heart of the home and deserve a lot of thought and planning.

I hope I haven't interfered in this conversation!

If i had an opportunity to re-design this kitchen from a functional point, i would have proposed the 'revised' version - i.e. two separate work zones.

If you have the room, ideally you would want to have a minimum 4' aisle width

Yes. They are 15" high x 39" wide. There are 2 of them on each side of a 30" panel which is simply a cover panel over a 12" depth the range hood. There is a light valance just below the cabinet to shroud the under cabinet lighting.

Hi stephanieg33

The width of the island is a full depth base cabinet (+/- 24") and the countertop is an additional 3", so 27" depth counter surface. The island is 10' long.

The aisles are 3'-3" wide. If you have more room, i would suggest a 4'-0" width instead but min. 3'-0"

Fridge is Thermador. All other appliances are Bosch - Dishwasher (super quiet!), Induction Cooktop, and Wall Ovens. Sinks - Blanco; Fixtures - Grohe

Hi shatzreise

FRIDGE:

The Fridge is a panel ready Thermador 36" w X 84" high. We then had the same high-gloss material matching the kitchen applied to the front. This requires a lot of skill so make sure you hire someone who knows how to do this.

IKEAs high cabinets are available in 80" heights + 4" for the plinth (kick) and this will equal the height of a 7' (84") fridge. IKEA also has a panel available in 36" width so there was no need to cut on at least 3 sides. Fridge side panels are also the same material as the cabinetry (high-gloss white).

Here's a link to the available cover panels at IKEA. http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/80153433 or search the following on their website:

PERFEKT ABSTRAKT $150.00 (CAD)

what are the cabinets, refirgerator + panels, countertops and islands made from? This is the first time for me by the way. I haven't started but am looking around right now. I guess my biggest question is for the refrigerator. How do custom paneled refrigerators get made/built? I went on Thermador's site and you can select 'custom paneled. So do you just order the fridge without the stainless steel and add the panel that you bought from your cabinetry manuacture? How is it added onto the fridge? My concern is if the fridge will overheat? I saw many people do this but I want to make sure. How much is the $ for the Thermador and the the panels. Do we just tell the cabinet manfacturer the sizes of it? How much was the cost of the your kitchen? Everything, like the applicances too. I read in your questions that your cabinets are from Ikea? How is the quality of it, I'm aware Ikea isn't top notch, but is it still good quality? Can you see anything that may make it look ... 'cheap'? Also with the island , the grey side, is the same material as the backsplash? It's thicker then the backsplash though, right? If not, then how is it holding up? Overall I LOVE your kitchen! Great job (: Thanks

Thanks for the kind words! As for cracking or splitting we didn't experience any problems with working with this material. When cutting i would purchase a small high-gloss drawer door (check IKEA's 'as-is' section and maybe pick one up for 5 bucks) and test by cutting it. Good luck!

We have such similar tastes. I had chosen almost the same, but Hansgrohe because it seemed a better price, but this Grohe is sleeker and the price is comparable. I ordered the Grohe Concetto vanity faucets (the angled one called NEW). I have settled (I think) on a sleek Krauss double sink but it's 32", just want to make sure it fits their 35-7/8" cab. For some reason Ikea says their 30" must have a min 35-7/8" cab. So that confuses me a bit.

Greetings 'tagew'

Thank you for the kind words.

The color Grey i would suggest depends on whether you have a 'warm' or 'cool' grey in the Living Room carpet. To get a similar look as the LG House consider the following:
AMES Tile DesertGlow Series DGT16 (wall) and DGT1224 (Taupe)
AMES Tile DesertGlow Series DGS16 (wall) and DGS1224 (Smoke)
http://www.amestile.com/section.asp?pageid=12061

For the backsplash, have you considered what we specified on this project. It is not glass. See more discussion on this here: http://www.houzz.com/discussions/126437/Backsplash

Hope this helps!

Hi hcoinvdiac,

Regarding the cost of the kitchen cabinetry, including island and backsplash only (see previous notes) was approx. $13K (CAD). Quartz countertops was approx. $4K (CAD)

These figures exclude installation and appliances.

Hope this helps! Thanks for the comment and interest in the LG House. Stay tuned for future projects to be uploaded to this site

Hi jenkinsear ,

You're welcome!...There has been no issues concerning excess heat. The bulbs themselves however hang approx. 1/2" below the face of the wood panel.

Greetings Stone Custom Homes,

This is a floating floor system from IKEA called "Markland Flooring" $2.49/SF. Unfortunately, the 'anthracite' colour (shown here) is now discontinued, but is still available in 'white'. Each laminate panel is a approx. 12" x 48"

I would recommend protecting the flooring with a rug at entry locations. The high-gloss finish does show dust and foot marks but is super easy to clean. ~ thirdstone inc. [^]

Both of the Markland have now been discontinued (i had used Anthracite in my office before I saw your project!). Any leads on the German manufacturer (who made this for IKEA), and any alternatives? What appealed to me is the honesty of this laminate--it seeks to only look like what it is. Again, any close 2nds?

installation of backsplash easy and advice on counter top color - I love how responsive you are to all these questions...very appreciated. also, love this kitchen. i am going to "steal" your idea of the ikea panel backsplash. how was this applied to the wall and is it easy to cut? also, i was planning on using organic white ceasarstone. now i'm second guessing myself and wondering if i should switch to blizzard/snow...it seems what everyone uses in modern kitchens. would love your advice. (the organic seemed "whiter" and "crisper" when we looked at the slabs.

Hi Haldesign - Thanks for the photos. The kitchen's looking good so far!...

There would appear to be quite a nice contrast already if you were to go with the Bllizard. So i think that's a good choice. Either way, Quartz in general is a very resilient material so i wouldn't be concerned about marking or wear and tear.

Judging by the height difference between the base cabinet and the gas range, looks like you're planning on a thicker profile (nosing) rather than sticking with the standard thicknesses of 20cm or 30cm from ceasarstone.

thanks for the advice! i am going with blizzard. and promise this is my last question. my fabricator is trying to talk me into a butt edge for my waterfall countertop instead of mitre. they said it looks more seamless but i feel the mitre would look better (they said it is much more challenging to get the mitre to look good) have you had any experience with this? thanks again!

Hi tiluarora,

I think all white with a gray backsplash would look sharp! Dark brown table would also look good for the table - similar color range i assume as the ceiling treatment over the island in the LG House.

The side panel of the kitchen island is 30", which is a panel size that is available from IKEA

Thanks for sharing ideas of your Kitchen project. Best of luck with everything.

tiluarora,

I forgot to answer your last question. The baseboard is not a Fryreglet. I used a shadow bead to end the drywall approx. 2" above the finish floor. The same flooring material (as a baseboard) was then applied to the 2" reveal below the drywall. I'll post some more information on this tomorrow...

Hi tiluarora - Thanks for the comments.

The entire kitchen is from IKEA with some slight adjustments and custom detailing to make it all work and unique. The countertop is Ceastarstone quartz - color "Blizzard #2141"

The finish floor is a floating system from IKEA called "Markland Flooring" $2.49/SF. Unfortunately, the 'anthracite' colour (shown here) is now discontinued, but is still available in 'white'. Each laminate panel is a approx. 12" x 48"

The toe-kicks all match the cabinetry. (high-gloss white)

Fridge built-in look... How? - Hi there, First of all, congrats on such an amazing project!, we are in the process of preparing/designing our kitchen and it is projects like yours and your awesome willingness to help others like us that make this project easier and fun. We have just noticed your fridge at the end of your counter, it seems like it has a built-in look. We are looking at ways to get one (24in width) so far we can see that we can fit it inside a tall akurum High cabinet frame (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/84381110/#/94381510) and cut the front doors to size from abstrackt high gloss white (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70115875/?query=70115875#/40115867) we are concerned about how to get the doors cut to size and whether the finish of the cut is going to look good. Can we ask you how you went around this? Also what is your fridge side panel material? also abstrackt high gloss white? Thanks once again for sharing your project. Paco

Thanks for the comment on the island.

Most of the kitchen material, with the exception of the quartz countertop, was from IKEA. We chose a contractor (who installed all the caninetry) based on his skillsets, availability and scheduling. We also knew that it would require patience due to some of the custom detailing requirements.

I have a few questions about this design. I know you put a strip of laminate under the top cabinets, but I don't think you used the high gloss white sheets from Ikea as those sheets are 1/2" thick. May I ask what you used?

Also, did you use this same material on the sides of the cabinets? My uppers will not be against any wall, so the sides of each set of cabinets needs a high-gloss covering. Does this stuff stay on well? Two ends will be near the stove. Maybe it is better if each set of upper cabinets (2) be encased in a frame.

I see you created a frame for the lower uppers to provide depth to insert them.

Thx for any answer. :)

Hi Lindy - It is in fact a thin high-gloss white plastic 'laminate' sheet. I think you're confusing this with the IKEA 'cover' or 'side panel' which is the 1/2" thick panel you're referring to.

For more information see my correspondence with another user. http://www.houzz.com/discussions/144344/Love-the-backsplash---You-say-it-is-not-glass---Where-did-you-find-it-

Here's the link to IKEA's website for the cover panel. http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/10200881/#/40069988

I love the look of the hood in the 12" cabinet. But a standard hood is usually 17-18" deep.
Are there any performance concerns with the 12" power pack? Is there any vapour accumulation on the underside of the upper (24" deep) cabinets?

Hi sm2012 - Yes, typically conventional hoods are 18"+ deep. However, the IncaSmart Hood is designed to achieve the look as you see here. There has been no performance concerns or issues regarding vapour.

Double oven. Ovens separate from the cooktop offer homeowners more flexibility with their layout. Also, many people prefer raised ovens rather than having to bend down to use a range oven. It's definitely better on your back! If you've got room for this arrangement and can find a spot for your microwave, this is a great setup. In a kitchen like this, a microwave drawer hidden on the back of the island is a great solution. The main sink on the island allows for the sleek electric cooktop to be located on the back wall.Variations: Double ovens typically come in 24-, 27- and 30-inch widths; the overall heights vary.
