This is one of my favorite examples of beautiful modern design that manages to wonderfully incorporate old-fashioned cowboy style. The furnishings are absolutely contemporary. The vintage window frame decorated with historic cowboy photos brings a sense of rugged romanticism to the room.

This is a fantastic way to display a handful of photographs. Old windows and doors are great and I love the idea of hanging one over a bed.

Woods enhanced the "plain and boring" bedroom by adding board-and-batten trim work, which keeps the walls from being overwhelmed by the bold blue paint. Tip: When deciding on a height for this type of trim work, think about the amount of room you want for hanging art above it. This window is one of Woods' oldest finds. The window "started me on my whole, primitive, antique journey," she says. "I've put different pictures in it and hung it different places, but I love it where it is now. I just Googled for old cowboy photos, printed them, and stuck them on the panes with tape. Easy art."

Woods, who chronicles her crafty fixes on The Virginia House, created wall pieces from a number of creative sources, but one of our favorites was this windowpane above the bed in her son's room. Although Wood has had the window forever, you could find one fairly easily at a local antique shop, salvage yard, or even eBay. Woods has displayed many different pictures in this window pane — she simply sticks them on using clear tape, and hangs it up using wire or twine. If you decide to hang artwork above the wainscoting, look for pieces that represent similar elements to the paneling’s details to maximize its presence. This windowpane reflects the vertical lines and thick border of the wainscoting.

Reuse architectural elements as decorative displays. If your basement or garage is crowded with old windows, doors and shutters, think about how you might use these creatively around the house. Window panels can house photographs, or you can fasten them to a base to make a unique table. Shutters and doors can stand in for your headboard, while old brackets can hold up floating shelves.

The approach: vintage accents. Vintage furnishings and accessories are part of the storied charm that draws us to cottage style. Rich chocolate linens, bright throw pillows and turquoise walls fit neatly into the cottage look here, thanks to the window-frame photo collage and the iron bedstead.
