annmarie2 It needs to be at minimum the width of the cooking surface. How much wider you go will depend on the style of the cabinets you're choosing. If you're going with a "hearth" style (where adjacent cabinetry comes to the counter), you want a bare minimum of 9" on either side as landing space before the cabinets come down, but also make sure to look at the installation info on the cooktop/range. Many require a minimum lateral distance to a combustible surface (as do many building codes). You want to be sure that's followed, or you might not get an approval from inspectors.
