Rebekah Zaveloff In my experience, you have to do many, many coats of paint to cover the oak grain so that the paint fills the grain to the point of hiding it. That said, I think it 's nice to see a bit of grain sometimes so that it actually looks like a wood cabinet.

3. Empty out your cabinets. So now that you've taken care of business, it's time to get your hands dirty. Rather than dreading this, look at it as an opportunity to do some serious spring cleaning. Paint or refinish cabinets rather than replace them. Kitchen cabinetry is one of the biggest-ticket items in a kitchen remodel, so unless your current cabinets are completely beyond repair, make do and mend them.
