Traditional Exterior

There was an old house on this waterfront site, but it required completely new construction to work for a young family of five. The new house is built like a boat, and every nook is used for storage. Most rooms have views and light on at least two, and usually three, sides. To keep the house out of the velocity flood zone, it is raised high on its coastal site. Breaking the front stairs into several runs softens the front stairs so that they do not overwhelm the house. We did not want a low pitch roof for the design, so dividing the long façade into three bays helped keep the overall building height lower. Breakaway stuccoed panels & lattice areas tie the building to the landscape & hide 12” square steel tube framing required on the ground level to resist storm surges. The home is Energy Star rated, great for a site exposed to strong weather year-round.
