Yes, if you want to see the contrast between the walls, trim and ceiling, paint your ceiling lighter {or darker}. A lighter ceiling will help it to appear higher, and a darker hue will do the opposite.

I usually paint the ceilings 50% of the wall color, becuase of the change in planes they appear to be the same color.
