Regarding the bench: I like some combination of this and the next one. I like the division under the bench to keep the clutter under control. The corbels add a decorative touch and baskets make sense to take advantage of the height. I don't like bead board, and since the area will be abused just a painted wall would probably work best if one could figure out a way to make it look finished.
