This boxwood hedge serves two purposes, one to act as a "Green" guardrail to comply with zoning and also a an architecture form of the space.

What species of boxwood is this? Also what is the name of the grass in front of it? Thanks.. »

Leeanne H. I love Liriope, and yes the blue flowers are beautiful.. between a periwinkle and electric blue. I think Liriope would be even better then Mondo grass for the water jets..

Liquidscapes Korean boxwood and it is not a grass, but Liriope, which has a small blue/purples flower in summer.

What to plant with it. If you've shaped your boxwood hedge to have a crisp, manicured edge, you may want to have some softer forms adjacent to it for contrast, like mounds of mondo grass. If the boxwood marks a line between lawn and woodland, it is a nice contrast to woodland shrubs with natural undulating silhouettes like rhododendrons. If you are framing ornamental trees, dogwoods and redbuds look wonderful with boxwood. Other evergreens create a wonderfully rich, year-round texture palette with boxwood.
added by J. Peterson Garden Design to Texas Gardener's February Checklist
Shear and shape plants. Prune immature fruit trees if necessary and shear evergreen shrubs to maintain shape. Ornamental grasses, as well as perennials like esperanza (Tecoma stans), firebush (Hamelia patens) and salvia (Salvia gregii), can be cut back to about 12 inches. Herbs like rosemary, oregano, savory and thyme will also appreciate a late-winter trimming. Be sure to avoid pruning your spring-flowering trees and shrubs at this time, as doing so will remove their flower power until next year.
added by Noelle Johnson Landscape Consulting to Southwest Gardener's February Checklist
Mid- to high deserts (3,000 to 6,000 feet). Lightly prune evergreen shrubs, such as boxwood (Buxus spp) and dwarf yaupon (Ilex vomitoria); it will stimulate attractive new growth for spring. Deciduous shade trees should be pruned in February too. Remove any diseased, dead or crossing branches.Get a head start on spring by planting vegetable and flower seeds indoors eight weeks before the last average frost date. Beans, cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes do well when started indoors. Check a vegetable planting calendar for information on when to plant in your zone.Shown: Boxwood (Buxus microphylla)
