Aboveground a timber cantilevered roof emerges, with its glazed openings oriented to maximize the sun's energy and light up the interior. The house’s thermal mass retains heat when needed, and the earth’s natural properties cool the house in the summer.
Good GlazingThermal mass needs to be used in conjunction with other passive solar design techniques, such as orientation, glazing and insulation. Large areas of glass allow the sun to hit the thermal mass so that it can absorb heat. The amount of glazing and where it’s located depends on the climate.

Think the parrot rescue could use this for another aviary building dug into the hillside, facing south of course.

Good glazing. Thermal mass needs to be used in conjunction with other passive solar design techniques, such as orientation, glazing, and insulation. Large areas of glazing on the north side of the home allow the sun to hit the thermal mass so that it can absorb heat. The amount of glazing and where it’s located depends on the regional climate.

1. A buried home in the Netherlands Embedded in a wooded Dutch moor where the ground rises up like a small mountain, this sustainable house is not just close to nature, it’s built into it. According to the architects, absorbing the house in the hill insulated the home but also hid it. The homeowners enter through a cut-out section in the mountain. Aboveground a timber cantilevered roof emerges, with its glazed openings oriented to maximise the sun’s energy and light up the interior. The house’s thermal mass retains heat when needed, and the earth’s natural properties cool the house in the summer.

not a great fan of the design outline, however, the genius is in the embedding principle. The thermal properties would be excellent. love the science in the design of this house.

The advantages of this would be to achieve a much larger property without the impact on the landscape. It would be a discrete property that would still offer modern amenities - especially if 2 storey as preferred in the P District. EG Utility areas, Cinema rooms, Boot Rooms, Doggy areas WHICH need minimum light to be functional, so create these spaces semi UNDERGROUND. Even Hot Tubs / Swimming Pools can be built semi underground with the most spectacular openings where necessary . Glass also has a reflective property so not so overt.
