Distinguishing traits. The rich hues of bougainvillea are the reason that this tropical, vining shrub takes center stage in many tropical and semitropical landscapes. Surprisingly, the vibrant colors do not come from the flowers, but from the bracts that surround the rather unremarkable small, cream-colored flowers.Sharp thorns are concealed underneath lush, green foliage.Shown: 'Barbara Karst' bougainvillea with tiny cream-colored flowers surrounded by colorful bracts

Sounds like a great plant to create a living roof line on our porch roof, as we get full sun there. Found at

Bougainvillea ou Primavera: Brácteas não são flores e sim folhas modificadas. Sol pleno.

Can be planted in pots. Place in direct sun, little to medium water with good drainage, and bring inside before frost

Bougainvillea - Noelle: You did a wonderful job singing the many virtues of bougainvillea, but someone needs to balance the information. Sorry to be the guy who throws cold water on this hot plant, but I feel like I need to discuss the dark side of bougainvilleas and to "Mirandize" readers. Being a landscape architect in the very bougainvillea-friendly climate of Santa Barbara, I'm quite familiar with this lovely specimen. Yet I find that most residential lots do not have the space to appropriately use them and rarely find myself able to justify using this plant in my palette. Although Noelle mentions that they can achieve a height of 15 to 30 feet, that message should be in 60-point, underlined, bold print. Most people either ignore this fact or think, "That's okay, I'll prune it." This is not a plant that lends itself to easy pruning, nor are the results usually satisfactory. I can't count the number of instances I've seen bougainvillea irrationally stuffed into a 3-foot wide planter under a window, only to watch it be continuously hacked to keep it from overwhelming the garden (or enveloping slow-moving pets and children). The irony is that bougainvillea blooms mostly on the new growth, so if it's being continually trimmed to fit a too-small space, it hardly ever flowers. The accompanying photos show what happens when someone: 1) puts the wrong plant in the wrong place, and 2) has absolutely no idea what to do with it once the thing gets too big. (Note the lack of flowers, and these pictures were taken in the height of summer.) Please, consider how much space you can give this beautiful, but extremely aggressive plant and consider how much time and energy you want to invest in keeping it under control. Plant this lovely creature where it can spread its wings or resign yourself to a lot of work, green waste and the occasional trip to the Band-aid aisle at the neighborhood drug store.

I love these kind of flowers! I had one a few years ago and it bloomed beautifully, but unfortunately I didn't know I could bring it indoors for our cold Colorado winters.

love this but know it needs protection from freezing temps and extreme air flow. had it around our pool for a while but winter eventually killed it. Anyway to incorporate, maybe in containers.
