A cheerful breakfast booth tucks into a nook next to a sun-drenched bay window. The built-in bench flips up to reveal storage for paper towels, tablecloths and other goods. The cushion is upholstered in Marimekko fabric from Crate & Barrel. "It's great because it has a waxy finish that's very easy to clean," says Zames. "This is very important for a family with a 2-year-old!" The pendant lights are vintage fixtures the clients found. The flooring is existing hardwood that Zames re-stained.

This open-plan living area is so small that the refrigerator and shelves butt up against the dining area. Yet what is worth taking away here is the way the built-in seating next to the refrigerator becomes a visual extension of the kitchen's cabinets. The extra seating removes what would have been an awkward bump-out for the refrigerator, turning the kitchen and dining areas into a unified space.

15. Kitchen + a teensy bit of paint = stenciled wall art. Make a statement with a single oversize number or letter, carefully stenciled.
