Beams - Size of beams?

Slight correction of terminology, posts are vertical, beams are horizontal. These posts are sitting on concrete bases because of the code requirement that all exterior wood must be 6" above grade. you will not need to provide these bases if your posts are above the ground. I do prefer, however, to provide a wider base to visually carry the mass of post. Suggest wrapping the bottom 8" with 1x cedar. Posts carry weight and it is important that you look at the detailing to make sure your overall design appears to visually carry the load of the post effectively into the ground. Sitting a big post on a thin deck or railing can defeat this requirement.

Thank you for the advice. I am having a local blacksmith wrap the bottom of the posts with iron straps. You have been very helpful, thank you again.

Beyond the courtyard, exterior spaces open up to surrounding vistas. Windy site reduces use but on spacial days this patio draws a crowd.
