The owners of this modest 2,300 square foot country home wanted to minimize their impact on the Earth and establish a lasting connection to nature. The project employed local craftsmen and used natural, recycled, locally sourced materials. The sunroom features an earthen mud floor made from the soil of the site! The house employs passive solar design concepts; the sunroom, situated at the center of the house, captures the warmth of the sun and radiates it throughout the living spaces. With sustainable building techniques, sensitive attention to the surrounding environment, and framed views of the exterior from every interior space, this house celebrates its site and connection to the land.
All the furnishings are made by local Sonoma artisans. In the foreground here is a rough model of what would eventually be the kitchen island. "Before you pay to have someone make a custom table, it's wise to have a mockup to make sure it fits in the space the way they want it to," Parker says. "I really celebrate the part where I'm building mockups." The clients wanted the open cabinets so that their colorful kitchenware would become part of the decor, and to make it easier to grab things while they're cooking and entertaining. The concrete countertops are by Bohemian Stoneworks.
Tile. Tile can be one of the most cost-effective partial backsplash and counter materials. Line up your favorite tiles in a single row for instant kitchen character and a very functional partial backsplash. You can find all sorts of great tiles left over from bigger jobs at tile showrooms or stores — just call and ask. Even mismatched tile can create a big impact for little money.

One row of black tile for the backsplash.

I love the various shades of tiles used as backsplashes, but wonder how open cabinets work...it would seem that they would decrease sanitation of dishes and glasses and cause dust build up.
