In the old village core stood an ancient farm, with a house, stone stable and traditional wooden barn. Later a smithy was opened there, even later, before the second world war, a village store with an inn was arranged. Today, on the ruins of decrepit buildings a new house with a garden that combines traditional and modern motifs was created. Images of old orchard, flowering meadows, sand petanque, majestic walnut trees and rosarium were recreated and preserved. Old apple trees were emphasized with circular sand carpets. Around the oldest one seven corner stones of the old house were set. The owners have lovingly called this place 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' when in spring the apple blossoms unveiled a Snow White's dress. * Photo Credit - Landscape d.o.o. Slovenia
Landscape d.o.o. Slovenia Hi Margery, we are sorry for the late replay, it looks we missed the question somehow. So, to the answer. The shade is simply attached to the existing, high and old walnut tree with a sisal rope on one side and on the house, it is attached with a standard metal clip, usually used for climbing (look in stores for mountain climbing or sailing). Hope we helped, sorry again for the late answer. Very best from Slovenia, Landscape Ltd.
Landscape d.o.o. Slovenia Thank you for your answer. Yes, it is metal profile - graphite powder coated. It is attached to the ground and to the wall (before the facade and paving were done!). It is a contemporary redesign of traditional stone or wooden main door portal...

ElleInOregon The yellow/orange plants on the left look like a lily-maybe a daylily , the white flower looks like a daisy of some sort. In back could be an older lavender plant thats well established, the just barely reddish plant in front might be a salvia not sure about the twiggy blue plant behind the lily. This looks like an older cottage garden.
There are usually a lot of seasonal magazines that specialize in cottage gardens and I have several books on then (all in storage or I would give you names). The best gardening book you can start with, though is the Sunset Plant guide for your area and a native plant book for your area. Most cities have plant societies that will help you learn about cottage plants that grow easily in your zone. Joining your local Hardy Plant Society is a fun thing to do if you're interested in plants.
I also love this look and have had it previously in my yard-and will have it again I hope after our new house is built.

Though the house is new, the white walls and a steeply gabled roof give it a traditional Slovenian farmhouse look. The shade cloth over the eating area provides shelter but isn't distracting. And in this climate and location, in the shadow of the Julian Alps, afternoon showers help keep the garden green and lush.

The variety of ground cover. The height they grow to and the wonderful variety of color and texture yet it holds together as a single statement due to its presentation/massing.
