Infanta (Curl) by Ralph Gibson

“I have photographed the female figure for many years and for many reasons. Any idea I was examining in my work at the time, be it Cubism, Surrealism, Minimalism, eroticism, etc., would be reflected in the shapes of the body. One of the very earliest known works of art is the Venus of Willendorf, ca. 25,000 B.C. It is testimony to our primal need to gaze into the psychological mirror of the human body. I photograph the nude the way I practice scales on the guitar. It is an ongoing and endless pursuit.”—Ralph Gibson, NYC 2011
