jillandmatt Thanks so much for your help! I am pretty sure we will go with walnut. Now I'm trying to decide between plank construction and edge construction. Craft Art sells the plank and Boos the edge. I think the edge has a more informal look that goes with our house (low country/art and craft style). The picture above looks like plank. The plank usually has a shiny finish and the edge just mineral oil/matte finish. I definitely like the matte finish better. Only thing I'm not sure I like is the edge finish is in some photos it has a lot of color variation and stripes- blonde stripes and dark stripes. Here is a photo of a Boos walnut top I took at a kitchen design store. Any thoughts? Thanks so much!!

Ronique Gibson These ceiling appear to be a 9'0". An average door/casement walk through door area is approx. 7'0" high. The ceiling looks like it is 2'-0" above this.

If you have a 10' ceiling, I suggest you extend your cabinets up to the ceiling, as in this picture. It will give you more storage and it makes your kitchen look great without having an awkward dust ledge above the top cabinets.

jillandmatt We are building a house and will have 10 foot ceilings. After much debate, we are going to extend the cabinets to the ceiling, but the top cabs will have glass, like in the picture. Our builder does all of his houses with 10 foot ceilings. You can look at his website: stonecrofthomes.net for ideas.
