Traditional Perennial Garden There are quite a number of plants in this grouping!...The usual english garden plants....the front row has some annual colour like nemesia (white and pink), lady's mantle (lime flowers - perennial), Nepeta 'Blue Wonder' (blue flowers - perennial), Hardy geraniums (perennial and various colours), grass is Carex 'Frosty curls', silver plant is Artemesia 'Powis Castle'. Middle row has bearded iris, siberian iris, Lupines (tall spires of pink), Roses (David Austin types - not blooming in this photo), salvias (both perennial and annual), peonies (not blooming in photo). Back row has Casablanca lilies, californian poppy, Aruncus - common name - Goat's beard, Phlox - (white and pink - blooms late in the season).
When planting this type of garden is it important to repeat some plants throughout the border to give it some cohesive thread. For instance I repeated the annual nemesia every 8' or so. When you plant a large leaved plant like the Lady's mantle you could put a more fine textured plant beside it like a hardy geranium or maybe the Nepeta. Add silver foliage throughout the border as a foil for the flowering plants and to "brighten" the border up when the perennials are not blooming. Mix some annuals in throughout...
