what are all the other plants in this planter? Can they handle shade? »

Glenna Partridge Garden Design Surrounding the fern I planted white double impatiens. Trailers are Dichondra 'Silver Falls' and bacopa. All plants do well in shade or part shade conditions. The Dichondra can also be grown in full sun as well. I love this plant! There are no flowers but the silver foliage is a knock out.
Here are the links for more info on the plants

I hope this helps!

Glenna Partridge Garden Design Hi plantnut,
There are 3 different ones that I would suggest. Acer palmatum 'Shishigashira' (Lion's Head Maple) (my favourite) which is very unusual and has small crinkled green leaves in the summer which turn gorgeous shades of red, orange, yellow. It gets about 5'-6' high and 3'- 4' wide. Google the name to get a photo of one. You could also plant an Acer palmatum dissectum 'Crimson Queen' (much more common but still very beautiful). The colour is burgundy in the summer, leaves are finely dissected and in fall it turns a bright red. It has a weeping habit and is easily pruned and shaped to contain the size. Very slow growing. If you prefer a green maple then there is also Acer palmatum 'Viridis'. If you put them in a container make sure it's a at least 2' deep and about 2' wide. Maples like a fair amount of water, in the heat of the summer, and do not like to dry out. (Tips of leaves will turn brown) Putting your maple in a larger container will help keep it happy. If you have drip irrigation then you should have no problems with the watering. Plant your tree with slow release fertilizer and during the growing season (April-August) feed your containers once or twice a month with a liquid fertilizer. (20-20-20). If the container is in deep shade the plant might not colour up as well as in dappled shade. I hope this helps and if you have more questions please feel free to ask.
