Modern Succulent Garden

Close up of succulent planting on a small balcony in Vancouver. Very low maintenance is required for these drought tolerant plants. Succulents are perfect for small containers and pots. Succulents don't need a lot of soil to thrive. The glass mulch helps to keep watering to a minimum and also is pretty to look at.

Even on a tiny balcony you can have interesting texture and colour without all the hassle of fertilizing and deadheading. Most succulents need very little in the way of fertilizing. You can use a slow release fertilizer after planting your containers and then every time you water the slow release fertilizer is activated. Or use liquid fertilizer every couple of weeks and dilute the mixture to about half strength. All succulents want good drainage and they mix nicely with other plants with similar growing conditions like charming flowering Lewisias or Sedums.
