You need to see the before photo to appreciate this kitchen. Small kitchen with a small budget. Custom cabinets, old stove, new fan in drywall hood. Playful brackets supporting cabinets and stove hood.
carol12thomas56 Love you stove!!! and kitchen too.
I found the exact same stove today on-line in canada were I live seller is asking for $1000.00 It is a 1950 okeef & merritt stove if any one is interested.
Michael and Heather Allen We use an old 1950's stove daily. It works fine, however I would caution anyone looking at one to consider that they usually have pilots and possibly match lit ovens. Not that either is a problem, just some people feel uncomfortable with it.
Nancy It's funny about the above comment that this was not a cook's kitchen because when I sowed my husband the picture - mainly pointing out the marble counter - his comment was that this was clearly a cook's kitchen. I really want a marble counter and have researched it and the consensus seems to be if you can handle a few stains, you will love it? (Also love the stove.)
How small was the budget? - I live in Oakland and would like to do a similar remodel on my kitchen.....nothing too fancy. I have collected some period cabinets (house built in 1914) and will need to have some more custom made. I'm trying to get a ballpark idea of what I can expect to spend. »
robert kelly The cost of the project would vary greatly depending on the scope of work. Here, we moved windows, doors, interior and exterior stairway, plumbing, gas, electric, water heater, furnace, new sump pump, and some new foundation. We used salvaged doors and windows which is time consuming. I think we spent about $40k (do it yourself price) overall and would guess this would be about $100k if bid out to a general contractor.
Tenant Proof Check out Jane Powell's Bungalow Kitchens, its not just bungalow's but period old fashioned kitchens from 1900's to 1940's. Great old fashioned kitchens that stand the test of time. She has great pointers and detailed explanations as well as a wealth of resources listings. She also lives in Oakland California and could probably help you.
I would strongly recommend a toe kick (the area under the cabinets for your toes that lets you get close to the counter) otherwise you will have a constant back ache working at your counters. I have lived in several apartments with kitchens from the 1920's and I speak from experience.
kcman99 I have the exact same O&M Stove. It works great!. Just curious, do you use the heater that is on the left. I used mine for a while but it was very inefficient.
robert kelly The floor is T&G fir. It was a pain to remove the linoleum. There is a tin can patch in the upper right corner. There is much better quality reclaimed wood flooring available. This is very rustic and bordering on "unfinished" looking
hillbat Thanks. I live in the east bay above Richmond. Have the same exact flooring in my 1930's kitchen which is very similar to yours. We have painted cabinets (off white) and Carrara marble too. Did this about 5 years ago. Haven't had to reconfigure anything. Just lucky. Have original large double stainless sink and I love our fir subfloor. We were able to refinish 3 times but time to refloor. I love the fir so much am probably going to redo with fir. Not fan of oak which is typical floor for this era home. Thanks for input. Jean Marie
Is older better? - I had an even smaller kitchen than this one in a 1980 townhouse in Wellington City, NZ (14 sq.ft). Eventually the old stove began emitting clouds of smoke, so I replaced it with a modern SS one. And that led to replacing the dishwasher and fridge, and eventually I got modern counter tops and cabinets and made it kind of modern. But I didn't change the footprint, which was small, efficient and just worked. »
The oversize brackets on either side of the stove are one of Kelly's favorite parts about this kitchen. Since he wanted the hood to stay in line with the rest of the style, Kelly built it himself. Using a drywall box around a hood insert, he accented it with molding and trim to create a simple but elegant piece. Kelly tore up the linoleum, revealing beautifully worn wood underneath, which he kept.
1. Pocket-Size Vintage-Style KitchenHomeowner: Robert Kelly of Piedmont, CaliforniaRobert Kelly's vintage-style kitchen is only about 145 square feet, but he doesn't need much more space — even with kids and pets around. Kelly's home was built in the 1920s, and preserving the original style was a big priority. Each appliance and finish was chosen to complement the house as a whole. The beautiful vintage stove was given to him by a friend.
If you have ugly cabinet doors, remove them and go with open shelving. Paint everything thing white (an accent color on the interior back wall also looks great) and feature your stacks of dishes, cookbooks or spice jars.See more of this kitchen
14. Vintage Elegance in a Pocket SizeNestled into 145 square feet, this kitchen stays true to its 1920s roots. Designer and homeowner Robert Kelly wanted all of his materials and appliances (including that gorgeous vintage stove) to stay true to his home's original style, and played with the circulation and traffic flow within the footprint to help it function for his family.
Can I do somrthing like this to fit the size and feel of the house? Cabinets, floors, counter tops, everything to fit the era, architecture of the house!
Nice shelving around cooker; like the way the brackets support the upper shelves without blocking worktop view. Not exactly what I'm looking for but some great ideas here that I'll be incorporating as I do the reno in the 12'x6' kitchen.
