Beadboard paneling added to the back of prefab or one-of-a-kind bookshelves creates a custom look without the custom cost.
Tip: Choose unfinished 1.5-inch sheets versus pre-finished, white 2-inch sheets for bookshelf back panels. They're about 30 percent less in price and can be given a custom update with a quick sanding and two coats of semi-gloss paint. Why spend the dough if you don't need to? Says the man who eats out six nights a week.
8. Embrace empty space. Realize the quality of blank space. Just because you have the shelves, it doesn't mean you need to make them chock-a-block full.
Aim to leave about 20 percent "breathing room" on each shelf. If that sounds unattainable, just open up as much free space as you can. It often takes several rounds of decluttering before you feel like you've gotten rid of everything you can. Why 20 percent? Notice in photos of homes you admire how much storage is actually filled, and I think you will find there is usually a significant amount of breathing room left between items.Style note: Throw in a sculpture or decorative sign to liven up an otherwise practical storage space.

Such good advice!
