If the coffee table will be in the centre of the room like this, a rectangle or square will be fine. Otherwise, if the coffee table is for the sofa only, then I'd recommend a rectangle so everyone on the sofa can reach it. Or, you could use two square tables side by side. These are easier to move around when you're vacuuming. Sometimes people use a table and an upholstered ottoman side by side and it looks interesting and eclectic.
