How do you get rid of the whitish run-off on the brick under the window? - Currently bought an older brick home with the same problem and tried to power wash it off with no success. Any other ideas? »
Minch Construction The "whitish run-off" is called Efflorescence, it is a crystaline deposit on surfaces. In most cases power washing will not remove this substance. The most popular solution is to try muriatic acid with subsequent flushing with water. See this website for detailed info: http://www.delawarequarries.com/cleaners/efflorescence.html
The main living levels of many 19th-century row houses and brownstones are raised a half or full story above the street level. The kitchens, storage areas and utility rooms were traditionally on the ground-floor level. Raising the main level creates a separation between activities on the street- and main-level rooms, allowing the latter to have larger windows
