One of our most stunning lacquered wall carvings, this masterful piece features a Japanese samurai warrior from the Edo period. The samurai is holding a specialized weapon called a "tessen" that looks like a folding fan. The tessen was usually concealed and used when the samurai did not have access to his sword. The tessen was sometimes carried in the samurai 's hand and often tucked into his belt, known as an "obi". Besides being a weapon, the tessen was also used on formal occasions, as part of Japanese etiquette. The tessen could be a destructive weapon when used in the hands of a skilled samurai, and there are many recorded duels in Japanese history showing a victory with this unique weapon. The samurai of Japan are one of the most iconic and honored icons in Asia, often featured in Oriental art. This beautiful painted lacquer wall carving will bring home that historic tradition to any room it is hung. A brass hanger at top of the carving makes mounting it easy.
