A fireplace surround tiled in these tiles from Heath Ceramics is my number one dream fireplace. They are unique and timeless.

Those same oval tiles also create a focal point in this white and wood living room.

Technically this isn't the direct fireplace surround, but I can't seem to do a fireplace ideabook without adding this Heath Ceramics chimney.

Arranging your furniture around a TV can cause problems when company calls. A banquette under the tube is unobtrusive when you're watching, but provides more spots to sit when needed.

If you have modern space, make the fireplace more of a focal point by tiling it to the ceiling. More black accents show themselves in the trim around the windows. The extended rectangle of dark stone or concrete around the fireplace draws attention to the long rectangles of the room. The TV would have much more prominence if white tile framed the firebox.

These clever drawers start under the fireplace and extend to one side, creating a low bench. On the other side, there's room for a cozy reading nook.

This fireplace features white ceramic tiles that blend into the ceiling, but a dark base that aligns with a wood bench next to it. Wood drawers at the floor take advantage of the space under the bench and fireplace base.

As you can see from this angle, the grid pattern is very prominent, leaving little room for error. The stacked bond installation method is much less forgiving than the more traditional running bond installation. However, the end result is stunning and well worth the extra effort.
