House Needs a Facelift! - Love, Love Love the linear look! Would it be possible to incorporate the wood slat idea on a 1960's bungalow? The front (which has a single door, living room and kitchen window) and a gable end and one side of the house which has a side door and two windows are what you see from the road. »
Shelley Gardea I'm so glad you love it! I think it's great too and my friend Erin has an eye for style. I took the photos, however I suggest you get in touch with Kras Design Studio (805) 967-1982 to get an architects point of view to your question. His company is the one who designed this. Have you posted a photo of your house and asked for feedback from the architects on Houzz? To see more photos of this exterior look at the reply to the other question posted about the wood slats.
Siding material - It looks amazing! Few questions...
1. Is this Ipe?
2. Is it mounted on metal (steel?) 2 x 4's?
3. Any other info about how they continued the siding above the roofline would be appreciated.
Thanks! »
Shelley Gardea Hi Kathleen,
The homeowners used a fancier redwood on the house face for its durability and stained it to the exact tone they wanted... a more chocolate hue.
It is 1x6 horizontal redwood siding on 2x furring over stucco. Extension is the same continued above the roof line with cutout for visual interest and to break the massivity of the piece.
I am attaching a few photos so you can see it from other angles. Yes, they did an amazing job!

Grass & Concrete? - What kind of grass is planted between the concreted area? or is that another material? Thinking of making an area like this in my back. Also might consider using K9 grass... »
Karl Kras of Kras Design Studio transformed the front of the home to give it a fantastic modern facade. "He turned a completely boring, flat, '60s facade into a kickin' modern presentation," Lee-Hawk says. The horizontal rich wood slats next to the variation in color tones in the garage door make for an unexpected and beautiful first impression.
This driveway-courtyard has two things going for it: line and rhythm. Bands of poured-in-place concrete alternate with similar-size bands of turf. You have to admit, this is way more exciting than an ordinary concrete driveway. The design transforms what would otherwise be a utilitarian driveway into a delightful, graphic auto court. The horizontal lines of the architecture play nicely with this treatment. And using bands of grass is a great way to make your driveway permeable.
