Corten Steel Water Feature - When considering the use of Corten for the water feature installation, did you seal or somehow treat the metal after it oxidized (rusted) to alleviate any staining the water may create with adjacent features or the water itself?
Thanks, Kurt Kraisinger »
H. Keith Wagner Partnership No, since Corten seals itself and stops rusting we didn't feel the need to. I have not noticed any staining, although the water makes a nice pattern on the steel.
With your corten steel installations, do you let the steel rust naturally, or do you accelerate the process? - We are looking to do our first corten steel retaining wall installation here in Toronto. The client is very keen on the idea, but, wants some assurance that the steel will rust evenly to an orange patina. I've seen some walls with a nice consistent colour, others that look "splotchy". Your insights would be much appreciated! Jean-Marc »
H. Keith Wagner Partnership The beauty of Corten steel is that it has a patented process that allows the steel to rust, but then it seals itself, forming a lasting finish that will not continue to break down. We have also used unfinished steel which will continue to rust and will eventually (in many many years) breakdown based upon thickness. Unfinished steel is much less expensive, but Corten have a great color.
