This painting was part of a body of work that involved boats on land. When I looked at the works together, I felt that they were paintings about the heroic journey; portrayals of characters who have returned home. Also, anytime I use a landscape evocative of Maine, which is where I grew up, it is because on some level I want the landscape to represent "the homeland." Coming from Maine, I also have this mythology of Captains' wives looking out to sea from the widow's peaks of their houses, waiting for their men to return. I wanted the woman in this painting to appear as though she may be mourning, but also very much the protagonist. Behind her, boats have been put away for the winter, like a kind of hibernation. It appears to be spring, or summer in this painting though, so like the boats, the girl is perhaps held back from realizing her potential. She may feel longing to go on her own voyage, but something holds her back. She may want to escape and get away, but she may also have a powerful connection to that landscape; she might be rooted right where she is supposed to be.
