Complementary ColorsRed and green are opposite each other on the wheel, so they are complementary colors. Though they remind most people of Christmas, that needn't always be the case. This distressed chair and amazing tile wall certainly don't say "holiday" thanks to their complementary colors.Orange and blue also are at opposite points. In using them, you'll have an instant complementary color scheme.
Dynamic Duo. Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel create a dramatic and visually stimulating space. Here, blue and orange enliven a stairwell and also emphasize the interesting angles of the ceiling.
One of the great things about Mexican design is the exuberant use of color. Here, contrasting but complementary colors meet at 90-degree angles to create architectural interest and enliven what would otherwise be a fairly ho-hum hallway.
Here's a similar take on orange and blue, with the proportions reversed. The blue helps to tone down the wall color and keep it from feeling cloying, and creates a sort of inverse focal point.

Taylor says the color wheel can be really helpful. "For a complementary color scheme that packs a punch, pick hues that are opposite one another on the wheel, such as blue and orange."
