The Square of Venus is 175 is from a series of paintings depicting keystone moments in the history of the Roman Empire. This square references the death of the Empress Faustina, wife of Marcus Aurelius, in 175 AD. She was entombed in her uncle Hadrian's Mausoleum which eventually became the Castel Sant'Angelo of the Vatican. Created in a mixed-media of charcoal drawing and acrylic paint, this painting uses geometry, history and bright bold colors to tell a story that is deep and rich yet the piece can also stand alone as a beautiful wall decoration in your space. About Magic Squares: These squares harken back to an ancient mathematics concept of Magic Number Squares. The squares were comprised of rows and columns of numbers that when any row or column is added, the total equals the same total of any other row or column. The Chinese first developed these Magic Squares in 650 BC but perhaps the first famous Magic Square was Albrecht Durer's Melancholia I which featured a 4 x 4 square. This painting utilizes an 7 x 7 square whose constant total is 175.
