Do you recall your first ballet? For me, it was The Nutcracker. Barely six years old, I loved the flurry of dancers, the fanciful costumes and the musical orchestra. But it wasn't until my late twenties, that the same ballet would move me to tears. Before the conductor cued a violin, the curtain parted, and out the two lead dancers stepped, on pointe. In that quiet moment, it seemed the whole audience drew in their breath, responding to the delicate grace and beauty embodied in such a simple step. Or was it the sense for the arduous practice and discipline the dancers endured for this very performance on this very night? Whatever the case, these dancers really deserve a big round of applause, and Anna Pavlova is no exception.
