Flat screen tv mounted over fireplace is popular. It is just black when off, then convenient location for viewing. I think this is a reasonable, fine way to go; your dad doesnt like it. :)

If the TV simply must go above the fireplace, it can be built in to tilt down to give a better viewing angle. This is less uncomfortable than otherwise.
