Patrick Sutton Associates Actually no, the pine piece already had a wax finish and since it is a powder room it doesn't see that much water splashing. Plus patina is part of the charm. If you wanted to put a more protective finish a piece i would likely use a matt finish waterbased polyurethane (oil based would change the color of the wood).
