Yes my mistake, the red plant in the front is Japanese Blood Grass. It can be invasive so use it carefully.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Japanese blood grass is perfect as a front of the border edging plant. It keeps a uniform size and shape, reaching about 18 inches tall.
Color. This abundant border is defined by colorful plants, from the Japanese blood grass in the foreground to the rhubarb-red Sedum 'Autumn Joy' in the back of the border. This palette enlivens nearby plants and demands attention. When used with confidence, color can create important focal points in the landscape. It can signal where to enter and how to proceed; it also draws the eye and invites exploration. Successful use of color is often restrained, limited to a narrow but powerful palette, which is exactly what you see in this design.

Designing Your Hillside GardenCreativity is in order in planting a garden on a slope. If your garden is contemporary, with clean lines, a block planting of a single species or cultivar may be in order. If your aesthetic is traditional, you may opt for a design emphasizing green foliage or white flowers. The rest of you can dare to mix things up and have some fun. When designing a garden on a slope, I find it helpful to stand at the bottom of the space and imagine myself conducting a symphony orchestra. A musical score may very well have crescendos, high notes, low notes, prominent and feisty movements and slow, understated movements. Translate this image into your plant design by crafting a blend of plants high and low in size, loud and subtle in color and texture, plants that move at the slightest breeze and those that don’t. The juxtaposition will add another layer of interest to your garden.

Mix shapes and textures. A garden bed filled with a range of shapes, from upright to gently spreading, will be more interesting than one where all the plants have the same general look. Texture, too, can add interest. Soft and fluffy plants will play off those that are spikier and stiffer.Get some planting ideas to try

Vary the plant height. A mix of tall and low plants, even if the difference is only a few inches, can make the difference between a garden that is static and a lively one. Keeping plant height in mind is also important when you plant. Generally, place taller plants at the back or in the middle, with the medium-height ones surrounding them and the shortest lining the edges. That way the shortest plants won’t get lost.
