They typically appear either on the second floor centered over the front door or in front or side gables.
While dark brown paired with bright white trim is a classic color scheme, a nice variation is to combine medium brown with cream trim. This will yield a softer and quieter exterior while retaining the architecture's classical formality.

I kind of like the design. Especially the columns. The article suggest to choose an exterior color that resembles the outside. For us that might be bright blue and airy. So perhaps a light blue with white trim paint scheme would go best on a design like this but for on our home.
This is a Federal style home because of the rectangle shape of the house. This house is also symmetrical with Roman influence that can be seen by the columns and the fan light.
We are used to seeing these grand old home paainted white. THis colour looks just fine and would be very practical, as it would not show dust after storms etc. Reminds me of COlorbond Paperbark.
