Rely on reference points. Designer Molly Luetkemeyer wanted to create a home that made her feel like she was on vacation every day. This kitchen certainly does the trick, drawing inspiration from the Greek islands. The space features several design elements: a yellow-striped ceiling, a zebra-print rug, a modern floral roman shade. To pull the space together, Luetkemeyer repeats the hues found in these elements with accent pieces placed throughout the space. Green plants on the table and console mimic the backsplash. A small lemon-hued box ties into the ceiling.

3. Humor and irreverence. This kitchen has it going on. And it's a lucky space in that the dining area is part of the kitchen, so more layering with furniture pieces is possible. (With a kitchen that's compartmentalized away from the rest of the house, it's tougher to achieve this level of mixing.)This is the sort of space that's fun to analyze. You've got modern tile and cabinets mixed with a traditional chandelier and dining table. There's more contrast created by the modern chairs and lacquered red console, and humor added with the yellow striped ceiling. Not only does this room masterfully mix periods and styles, it also has a handle on color that few have.

Lift your mood with a cheery striped ceiling. Your arms will beg for mercy with all of that taping and painting overhead, but your eyes will thank you when the job is done. Wide stripes in sunshine yellow and white are a bold choice, but kept to the ceiling they feel fun and unique without overwhelming the space.

Pattern MashupThis kitchen explodes with imaginative use of color and pattern. The green mosaic backsplash extends the leafy foliage just outside the door, and yellow ceiling stripes magnify the yellow in the fruit and accessories. To top it off, an irregular mirror reflects the entire mashup.
