Could be some rope lighting, could be flourescent tubes. If you go to the cabinet department of a home improvement store, they can show you the options to get that nice glow overhead. It needs to be on a seperate switch, just like the undercabinet lights. Great lighting is an art form and this room does it well.

That looks like a Verde Butterfly or Uba Tuba to me - though it could be absolute black, but it appears to have a bit of green in it.
