Formal Water Garden
http://www.laughingwatersinc.com

This garden imagines the ruin of an ancient Roman bath, remodeled into a koi pond and swimming pool in a splendid formal garden. All over Europe at the height of their empire, the Romans built elaborate baths connected to gymnasiums, not unlike modern health clubs. This landscape, inspired by "Capability" Brown, who designed the gardens of many English great homes in the 18th Century, incorporates the weathered, carved stone of a rediscovered Roman bath organically into the landscape, with natural boulders standing in contrast. Water lilies, iris and other aquatic plants inhabit the water's edge. Biological filtering by plants and bacteria would make it safe to swim among the fish.

Although the look of this small pool isn't strictly natural, it still works. This pool combines two principles of the English landscape: a water feature and the appearance of a Roman ruin. It's also a good choice for a smaller space where a large natural pond isn't practical.Design tip: Adding a formal pool next to a patio is a nice way to make the transition from formal areas next to the house to a more nature-like garden beyond. The lines of the pool play off the formality; the water softens the overall look.

This has the feel of Greek or Roman "ruins" from antiquity...a lovely touch in a garden or water feature.
