Le Petit Chalet rustic-landscape

Le Petit Chalet

A durable, meaningful design heals a devastated residential property bordering Acadia National Park and Somes Sound on Maine’s Mount Desert Island. Comprehensive stormwater management strategies shape new landforms, resulting in elegant grading and thoughtful drainage solutions. Native plant colonies stabilize the site, regenerate habitat, and reveal wildlife patterns. Exquisitely crafted new masonry, built from an authentic palette of local reclaimed materials, gives the garden a unified, established feel. Lichen-encrusted stone retaining walls define edges, thresholds, and overlooks, and thick slabs of salvaged granite embedded in the earth provide gathering terraces and pathways. With balance restored, brilliant seasonal drama unfolds.

These are indeed about as deer-proof as you can get. We use them frequently for this very reason. Good luck!

I'm not sure if hayscented fern is native to Georgia. I would suggest looking for native woodland ferns to Georgia or checking with your local nursery for suggestions. Good luck!

Yes--these chairs are always outside. They only last for about 10 years and need to be replaced. I imagine you could bring them in annually and they may last longer...

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Jay Sifford Garden Design added this to Unwind in Your Own Private Garden Escape
Use mass plantings to create flow. "Flow" is one of those words that is better felt than defined. This photo defines "flow" better than any dictionary ever could, and it feels right, doesn't it?Using many plants of the same species creates unparalleled visual impact. A friend of mine told me that she would go to the nursery, spend $1,000 on one of this and one of that and never notice them again because they became visually engulfed by her large space. Together we planted 80 autumn ferns in a serpentine line around the back of her koi pond. She was astounded by the visual impact when she first stood back and saw the result. The reason the concept of mass plantings works so well is that the eye flows uninterrupted, seeing the entire space as one element. The result is most assuredly a calm sense of relaxation.
Once the garden is complete, plants have been left to their own devices and the right atmosphere has been created, it's time to sit back — in your Gothic pointed-arch chair, of course — to enjoy the mystery and serenity you have created.More: Does Your House Have a Medieval Heritage?
Donald Pell - Gardens added this to Why the Art of Restraint Is So Good for Your Garden
Embrace the landscape you have. Find plants that thrive in your garden and add more of them. If it's a sunny spot, consider using more grasses to dominate the ground plane. If the area is shady, consider adding more trees and using ferns for groundcover. This beautiful garden has masses of fern covering the ground plane and groves of birch sited to create some intrigue beyond — it's simple, bold and calming.
Two can keep an eye out for bald eagles from this overlook.
Jay Sifford Garden Design added this to Explore Your Garden Personality: The Collector
Rediscover simplicity. Sometimes the devil is in the details and less is more. If your garden collection is frantically driving you instead of bringing you peaceful enjoyment, it may be time for decisions and change. I know many collectors who have reached this point. Evaluate your plants; take note of those that are performing well and those that aren’t. Consider planting a single species en masse. In the end you won’t be sorry.More: What Kind of Gardener Are You? Find Your Archetype

Have you ever been hiking in a forest and could hear the palpable silence? Consider mulch as an option for the more informal paths in your space. The experience of walking on a mulched path is quite different from that of walking on a concrete sidewalk or an asphalt driveway.Shredded mulch is readily available, inexpensive and likely the by-product of industry. It may need to be replenished annually and can adhere to shoes, so it’s a better choice for outlying areas of your garden.

The ferns we used here are a staple in just about any woodland garden we design. It is called haysented fern, (Dennstaedtia punctilobula). Plant it in areas where you have erosion, and be prepared to let it take over... The fall color is amazing too--buttery-yellow and rust. Good luck
