Cunningham has been gardening in Maine since he was nine years old, so choosing plants for this project came naturally. I suppose you could say all gardens are, in the end, to look at and enjoy. But I do feel that some surpass that and are designed for the sheer visual pleasure they provide.From the roots of the herbaceous borders of the beginning of the last century, the mixed borders we now enjoy planted with shrubs and perennials create a feast for the eye, without perhaps providing any further practical use other than ground cover.

The plants we used here are: Salvia 'May Night'. The lamb's ear has been very aggressive and I would recommend using it sparingly... The Alliums are common chives, and we also used Sedum 'Autumn Joy', Iris 'Caesar's Brother', Alchemilla mollis, and Perovskia atriplicifolia. This garden is built on a very exposed hillside in Downeast Maine, and everything is very tough. Good luck!
