Taking a cue from small cities in Provence, we installed a doggy toilet in our small San Francisco garden, so that our pup would have a designated place to pee, saving the plants and minimizing the smell. It's easy to install one: just dig a hole 3 or 4 feet deep (the width will depend on how large your dog is...we made ours roughly 3 ft in diameter to suit our boxer). Fill the hole with layers of rock in three sizes, largest at the bottom, smaller in the middle and a thick layer of pea gravel at the top, to ground level. That's it. You can edge it with wood or brick if you like (to keep the gravel from migrating outside the area), use plants to hide it from view, top it with more decorative material than pea gravel (sea glass? river rocks?) if you prefer...doesn't much matter. Once you've trained your dog to pee there, and only there, all you need to do is hose it down periodically (during the non-rainy seasons) to keep the area smell-free. We aimed one of the sprinkler heads at it, so we don't even have to hose it down. Works like a charm. 4 weeks ago · Like · 10
