Belmont Hill Residence

The master plan for this south-facing woodland property celebrates dramatic topography, muscular canopy trees, remnant fieldstone walls, and native stone outcroppings. Sound vegetation management principles guide each phase of installation, and the true character of the woodland is revealed. Stone walls form terraces that traverse native topography, and a meticulously crafted stone staircase provides casual passage to a gently sloping lawn knoll carved from the existing hillside. Lush perennial borders and native plant stands create edges and thresholds, and a crisp palette of traditional and contemporary materials merge––building upon the surrounding topography and site geology.

We used alchemilla mollis, heuchera v. 'caramel,' astilbe 'bridal veil,' nepeta f. 'walker's low,' geranium 'rozanne,' perovskia atriplicifolia, and a shrub called inkberry. Good lock!

This gravel is actually a product called chip and seal, and it is applied to asphalt to give it the look and feel of loose gravel. We sourced this material from J.F. Price in Weymouth, MA. Good luck!

My beautiful natural stone walkway is driving me crazy. The paver filler is gone and the ants have found a home in my walk. They throw up sand as they make their home and that sand ends up in my house on my new floor, ugh. I've tried ant killer and the ants just laugh and move to another part of the walkway. We had some kind of pesticide filled filler but it must have had herbicide too because it killed the lawn surrounding the walk. I don't want that again. Any ideas?

Hi there---the paths are actually a product called "chip and seal." There is a layer of asphalt, then a layer of liquid tar, and then the gravel gets embedded into the asphalt. Very similar to an exposed aggregate concrete.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Catmint and geranium rozanne add ever-blooming color down the front walkway throughout the summer. The walkway and the driveway are made of Chip and Seal, which has an asphalt base, then a layer of liquified tar topped with a layer of embedded crushed pea stones. This gives the look of stones without the scatter caused by shoveling and plowing in the winter.
Becky Harris added this to Great Design Plant: Astilbe
Astilbe is a versatile plant. Here are the best ways to use it: In a mixed perennial gardenIn a cutting garden (these were originally grown in Europe for for their value as cut flowers)In all-white gardens, including moon gardensFor foundation plantingsIn an all-astilbe border gardenEn masseAs a woodland border

9. Gravel-look path. To get the look of loose gravel without having to bother with scattering stones, the landscape designer of this space used a treatment called chip seal. Applied to asphalt, it creates the look and feel of loose gravel.
