The master plan for this south-facing woodland property celebrates dramatic topography, muscular canopy trees, remnant fieldstone walls, and native stone outcroppings. Sound vegetation management principles guide each phase of installation, and the true character of the woodland is revealed. Stone walls form terraces that traverse native topography, and a meticulously crafted stone staircase provides casual passage to a gently sloping lawn knoll carved from the existing hillside. Lush perennial borders and native plant stands create edges and thresholds, and a crisp palette of traditional and contemporary materials merge––building upon the surrounding topography and site geology.

What Houzz contributors are saying:
Purple coneflowers, Russian sage and ornamental grasses bloom through July and August.
Whether you are snipping coneflowers for arrangements, gathering lavender for bath salts or finishing up the basil, July is a month of abundance. Keep deadheading and snipping leafy herbs for more production into fall, and keep thug weeds such as bindweed out of the garden. Don't forget to enjoy the steaming weather while it lasts. Snow will be here before you know it!More:How to Design a Great Side Yard
One Last Hurrah for the GardenThe last of the summer blooms are winding down, including the beautiful fields of echinacea and all those purple-spiked plants. Allow the seed heads to develop to feed the birds or to sow for next year's garden. Alternatively, chop off those heads if you hate the look of drying seed heads. (Just try to hide from the lingering gazes of birds when you do: They want those seeds!)
A little light tidying. September is the perfect time to putter. Continue to clip dead flowers from earlier-blooming perennials, roses and shrubs, but leave a few seed heads on plants such as coneflowers and Black-eyed Susans for the birds to enjoy. Remove mushy or diseased leaves promptly (be sure to check at soil level) to reduce the risk of disease.

Perennials. Coneflower, shasta daisy, four-nerve daisy, lantana, salvia and yarrow can be planted this month. Look for 1-gallon pots for faster growth and spread. Ornamental grasses. Maiden grass, bamboo muhly, big muhly, pink muhly, inland sea oats, Mexican feather grass, switchgrass and purple fountain grass are great grasses to try. Choose grasses in 1- to 5-gallon containers.Note: Some grasses, like Mexican feather grass, can be invasive. Be sure your plant choices are appropriate and recommended for your area.
Texas. "Almost any plant easily grown from seed can be sown this month," says landscape designer Jenny Peterson. "Be sure to check the planting directions on the backs of the seed packets to know the proper planting depth for each seed type."Get her Texas April checklist
