Castle Building & Remodeling The price of a project like this truly depends on how much plumbing, wiring, etc. needs to be done to meet code. This house had structural changes during the remodel (adding walls and moving walls) and that had an effect on the price. Where are the shut off valves? - I want to do this, but would like to know where to position gas shut off as well as water valves so that there is good access. Also, is it possible to plug in the appliances and then push them into the tight space? »
Castle Building & Remodeling What a great question. To start, the gas shut off and water valves are behind the unit, accessible through the access panel in the adjoining closet... The electrical cords and gas whip are long enough to attach just outside of the closet before pushing into the opening; much like a conventional range in a kitchen. The dryer vent would be hooked up after the dryer is in place, through the access panel.
All of the connections could probably be made after the appliances are pushed into position but we recommend that you do it before hand for ease.
Hopefully that helps! Good luck and share pictures of your project when it's complete, would love to see how it turns out!
What brand of stackable W/D are these? - I have a similar application to do in a hopeful remodel and need to put a stackable in a closet by the bathroom also... »
DIY Tips? - I would really like to do a DIY of this project. I have a similar closet in my laundry room right now and am hoping I can just extend the plumbing and create a mudroom area where the washer and dryer are currently. Do you have any tips? »
Castle Building & Remodeling Frankly this was a complicated project that would be tough to correctly as a DIY project. Tips 1) Make sure your washer dryer fits through the door 2) think about combustion exhaust - check codes 3) think about access to the rear of the units so you can hook them up 4) get a structural engineer and have them OK altering the joists below so a disaster pan that collects flooding water into a drain can be installed flush with the floor 5) a washer hose that breaks in an unfinished basement isn't a big deal but in this case it sat above the new kitchen 6) dont forget power 7) we had to install removable stop so the units would fit through the door - it was a tight squeeze. I hope this helps.
IMAGINE They came out simply on ROLLERS ?,!!?! - Imagine the simplicity of these coming out to clean behind, plumbing touch ups, dust bunny removal etc..!?!? THIS is a Space Savers DREAM COME TRUE! »
Castle Building & Remodeling It wasn't quite that easy in reality because they barely fit in the closet and there is a stainless steel disaster pan under that would stop a leak from ruining the main floor. It is a great space saver.
Castle Building & Remodeling This is actually a 30" swing door. You could get one like this in Toronto at a lumber yard. The washer dryer barely fit. We had to remove the door stop and reinstall with decorative washers in case the washer dryer needed to be removed. Also consider a stainless steel disaster pan under the washer dryer in case a hose or the washer ever fails. If on a second floor a flood can do a lot of damage to room below.
This new trend! - I see many now stacking washer & dryers. Looks very nice and saves space but seems it would be extremely hard to remove clothing from top unit. »
Castle Building & Remodeling The units themselves are approximately 38" tall to the height to the bottom of the upper opening to remove clothes out of the dryer is approximately 54" high, which is low enough to see and retrieve all pieces easily. this is fit inside a standard height door opening in the closet, the height of the opening is around 80" tall...if this helps!
kennedycollinz I am 5'5" & have no difficulties with the height. As a matter of fact it is a God send for people with bad backs that find it difficult to stoop over. It's great!
Castle Building & Remodeling The finished dimensions are 34" wide by 34" deep. The back wall is 2x6" deep, which is probably deep enough to handle the 4" dryer exhaust vent, which goes up inside the wall to the attic and comes out the roof.
The back wall is 30" AFF to 60" AFF. This is the location of the access panel located in the side wall of the closet behind the laundry closet. So to access the water and gas connections, and most of the back side of the units one must unscrew the access panel inside the closet behind the laundry closet.
We would be happy to give you more in-depth details of this project sounds like something you plan to continue pursuing, but the dimensions and location of access panel are a good place to start when considering a laundry closet.
Embrace fold-up finds for the laundry. If your washer and dryer are on the main floor of your home with little to no storage space around them, you'll have to get creative with your laundry accessories. Try mounting a storage shelf on the back of a door to hold detergents, and look for collapsible drying racks and ironing boards that you can slide in beside your machines.
