A mix of walnut veneer and ivory laminate cabinets gives this kitchen a natural balance of light and warmth. An in-cabinet dish rack above the sink is a custom detail that was incorporated to meet the clients' needs, along with a compost drawer above the trash pull-out. Up lighting, down lighting and pendants combine to provide a well-lit kitchen environment.

Does this compost bin have a sealed lid? Does it not stink with common use? I »
tall glass architecture This one doesn't have a lid, but since it's a custom design, there's always the option of choosing a bin with a lid that sets into the top, as long as that bin has a lip along the top. To answer your question thought, it's a small enough container that it's emptied/rinsed regularly and doesn't have time to stink things up. If it were an issue, I'd recommend adding a horizontal seal along the back of the drawer face.
Would this work as a "sattelite" garbage pail? - In my new kitchen, cooktop will be across the aisle from the sink in the island. This is the first time I will not have a sink on the same run of counter as the cooktop and won't be able to clean the countertop around the cooktop by sweeping things into the sink! I am worried that I will end up with stuff falling on the floor as I try to sweep it into my hand to take to the trash pail. I am used to having either the trash or a sink in every work area and it really facilitates clean-up. I am thinking that this little compost drawer would be perfect as a secondary trash pail that I could sweep into near the cooktop. I've never seen this before, in any kitchen store I've been in. Can you reveal who makes it or how it was constructed if custom? Thanks. »
Aggie Purvinska Why don't you have another small back up prep sink on the same run as the cooktop? Or at least a garbage pail pull out or through counter on that run?
tall glass architecture This is definitely a good solution for that problem needing an immediate place to catch crumbs and other prep leftovers. Though this was a custom job by our cabinet builder, the idea is quite simple so I'm sure a regular drawer could easily be converted. We took the drawer above the trash pull-out and inserted a 'lid' piece across the top --this should be something very wipe/clean friendly like melamine or acrylic (for spills.) Choose a common-sized bin that will fit in the depth of the drawer. The bin needs to have a lip along the top so that it can drop into an opening in the 'lid' piece and be fully supported. You can easily lift this in and out to empty the compost.
tall glass architecture Our cabinet builder made it custom to fit a typical plastic bin size. The bin slips in and is supported by the lip around its top.
Make going green a habit by placing the recycling bin next to the trash can. This terrific recycling hub has a built-in compost drawer paired with a pullout trash can and a general recycling drawer. It makes for easy cleanup without taking up valuable floor space.

I like that the compost bin is just under the work surface. Cuttings can be easily wisked in as they accumulate. I also like that the trash uses the space right below that. No sense having smelly stuff in more than one location.

Love turning the top drawer into a compost drawer, so easy to cook with. Maybe it just holds the removable one that can also hang on the front of any cabinet or drawer...
