Travertine tile floor? - My husband & I fell in love with a travertine tile, then the sales lady told us about the risks of stain. Has anyone installed this before & were you happy with the results including wear? »
Elegant Tile and Stone Leah....If you are referring to pavers, travertine does not stain as long as you maintain very basic upkeep. If you are extremely nervous about it you may chose to seal the stone.
Tile-Stones Hi Leah,
Travertine tile is one of the most popular tile choices, and all of our customers have been extremely happy with the results.
Because travertine is a natural stone, it is porous and susceptible to stains, as the sales lady told you. If you're going to install travertine in a place where there is a risk of stains, such as the kitchen, or a high traffic area, such as a hallway or living room, it is recommended that you seal your travertine at least once, sometimes twice a year. Be sure to immediately clean up spills in order to reduce the risk of staining.
If you're still concerned about the upkeep, consider porcelain tile. Porcelain is a man-made substance and the result is a material that is much denser and tougher than the average ceramic or natural stone tile. Because porcelain is man-made, it can come in virtually any size, shape or color. A result of porcelain’s high density is its incredible resistance to stains; the tile will generally absorb zero to one half of one percent of the moisture that it comes in contact with. Porcelain tile requires little upkeep, only occasional cleanings with soap and water, or a window cleaner for tougher messes. Porcelain tile is also generally cheaper than travertine tile because it is man-made and therefore easier to acquire. Because of its durability and resistance to stains, porcelain tile is ideal for high traffic areas, or households with children / pets.
The pictures on the top row of the below images are travertine tile and the pictures on the bottom are porcelain.
