immercedes you can paint over the knotty pine. First do a light sanding over it, then prime it with oil based primer. If you don't use oil based it will peel off later. I prefer "Cover Stain" oil based primer which covers knots very well. You may need two coats if they are really strong. Then you can use any color latex paint. It turns out beautifully and is very durable.
