Malka Sabroe-JoHanson I am so sorry for this delay in answering your important question. In a living room a alley way or walking space is 36" but in a closet, you can have at least 24". So, the clothing takes at least 24", add that together and you will need 48" space from the wall to the island for the proper walk around space. Sometimes, your island will only be 16" x 24", which would be fine if this is what you need or want. Many times I have clients complain still that it gets in the way or they just pile stuff on top of it. Good thing when it works for you. Thanks,
