American Mammy Rocking Settee, Original Paint, circa 1840
A very fine rocking settee, historically known as a mammy bench on which a mother or nanny could sit next to a cradled child and rock the baby to sleep. The cradle arm is removable. Fine turned spindles and some paint decorate the back of the bench, and a line that frames the seat. Fine scrolling arms. A soft dip was formed into the seat of the bench, originally allowing for some comfort.
